gRoWiNg Up TRAUMA

Trauma situation #1
Well Thomas never took a binki but took a liking to his pointer and middle finger however, for those of you who have been following this blog for awhile now should know this, but that habit was cut cold turkey when we had a mishap that involved an escalator and the airport police that you can see here. So he took a liking to his blue blanket, and not just his blanket, but a specific corner on his blanket. He sucked the daylights out of this thing, and no matter how much Spray N' Wash I used, it was rancid, and starting to decompose, so it had to be cut. I'll just say it has been tough on the little guy. Lately he has started taking any binki around and sucking so we may have gone full circle here, who knows?

Trauma situation #2
It started out with the great idea of moving Thomas to a big bed. He was so excited, and the first two nights went well. Then came the realization that he could get out of his crib. For 2 hours Nolan put him back in the bed, he got out, put him back etc. SUPER NANNY IT DOESN'T WORK. Finally we skipped the nap, and that night put a kid lock on the door so he couldn't get out. He played forever, and managed to pull out every book and piece of clothing we own, but finally fell asleep right against the door as is pictured below. The next day not so succsessful. He would not play and fall asleep, just scream. An hour later of screaming I tried laying by the bed on the floor, but he wasn't buying it, so he ended up in the crib. The next day we asked where he wanted to sleep and he said Crib, so the big bed is no longer.

Trauma Situation #3
Thomas had his 2 year appointment and got the last round of his vaccines. No more shots for him for awhile at least. He is up in the weight, a whopping25 Pounds, and 35 inches tall. Grace also had her 2 month appointment. She tipped the scales at 11 pounds 2 ounces and was 22 inches long. Her head was in the 90th percentile, but the height and weight were both in the 60th. The shots were no good, and for about 2 days she wasn't the happier camper, and had a fever, but now is doing well and slept for 8 hours 2 nights in a row. YEEHAW!

We have our non-traumatic moments as well. Nolan had Veterans Day off Tuesday so we drove to tri-cities and shopped and ate out, it was a good break. He also had a good birthday, thanks to everyone for the nice comments and phone calls. Thomas loves making things with his big blocks, and Nolan really gets involved also. People have asked me if Thomas still lines things up. The answer is yes, except not with everything now just toys.
Thomas loves to try and floss. This morning I came out and he had gotten just a little too mcuh floss. Grace really responds well to this crazy boy. She will turn to his voice, watch him play, and smiles a lot when he gets close to her face. The other day we sat and watched as he tried tickling her so soft when she was in the bouncer. He just wants her to grow up and play with him soon.
Nolan and I, however, want her to stay this little forever...

I loved this post. THe pictures are all so cute -especially of grace in tub she is getting so big -11 lbs and 2 oz already! And in her pretty dress. I also love the one of Thomas laying right beside her -and all of that floss he had. He will have some pretty clean teeth. I am sorry sorry to hear about the trama I hope it gets better soon. The picture was pretty funny of him by the door. I always wondered if the supernanny idea would work -I love the show (but don't watch supermanny -not very good). Glad that you were able to spend family time all together this week. Hope that all is going well -sorry this is kind of long.

Correction -not in the tub but just out of the tub. Too cute!

I just emailed you...Sorry for the trauma situations. That is really funny about the corner of the blankie. And the bed/crib. I'm proud you got the kid lock and let him fall asleep on his own. I've probabaly ruined Seth by being too big of a softie. The pictures are all so cute. I can't believe how everyone is growing and changing. I love the one of Grace smiling. Anyway, cute kids!!! Have a good weekend.

Kid trauma can be so hard and so exhausting, just hang in there. I was so lucky with Dallin when he moved to a toddler bed. Because he was in day-care they switched him over at 18mo. which was way too early I thought. But from then on he just followed what the other kids did and went to sleep. I have no idea how it will be with Mason, I am not looking forward to it. The blanket is so sad, sorry he has lost his security, hopefully he will just get attached to another corner. Grace is so adorable as always, I love her dress!

What a cute post Ashley! Thanks for the updates on your kiddies. I'm sorry about the toddler bed episode! I'm not even trying till I absolutley have to. I've heard too many horror stories like yours. That's funny about his blankie :) I might have to do the same thing soon!

Dax had a really hard time with the big boy bed too... he would run down the hall and hide in my room. I would have no idea where he was. Then for a long time he did really good, naps and all. Now were back to running down the hall and hiding again, and going potty like 50 times...

so kids just go threw stages I would keep at it.

Though traumatic in the Harper home, what an entertaining post. Funny about the blanket! The funny security things they find. Great post!

You have such cute kids! Poor Thomas and his blanket. Kasen loves a blue knit blanket that is unraveling, he will be a sad boy soon! Switching to a big boy bed is torture! I don't blame you for sticking with the crib for now! Kasen and Thomas also weigh the same amount! Thomas must be a little guy too! I am glad that you have had some good even with the bad!

Sounds like your kids are keeping you busy. Ellie likes to suck her first finger. I don't know how I am going to get her to stop yet but I will take that over having the escalator injury (ouch!). Hopefully you guys get the sleeping situation worked out. Having a baby wake you up is hard enough then to add a crying 2 year old on top of that is rough.

I loved the pictures of Thomas laying by Grace and Grace in her beautiful dress! Good luck with getting Thomas to bed! Wow!nice pictures of the corner cut off the blanket. Sometimes mothers have to have tough love-like when Nolans bunny got "lost" in the mountains!

That's such a cute post! Bedtime was hard for us too, I hope you find something that works. I love that picture of Grace, she's totally smiling, is she really old enough to do that? I can't believe she's 2 months already.

That is so funny about the blanket. I have the EXACT same problem. Well, except for it's not a corner, it's the whole thing. I will probably be doing a post soon about it because I'm working on a solution...and it's a little more drastic than cutting off a corner, so we'll see how that goes. Isn't it funny what they suck on? I can't believe how big Grace is getting. She looks almost as big as Thomas in that picture!

Cute! So sorry about the trauma though. I've been there with the 'big kid bed' - it is not fun. I say keep them in their crib as long as possible!! Eventually they can handle a little more freedom. I love Grace in her little dress.

I'm so excited to see you this weekend! This was such a fun post. It was great to get updated on your family. Thomas seems like such a funny kid. I wish I were bringing Tanner along because I think they would make great mischief together.

I was just going to comment that you have the most comments on your blog that I have ever seen! We are also struggling to keep our two year in his bed. It's so frustrating. And he's a binky lover. All these great growing pains.

Wow, Ash - tons of people comment on your blog!! That blanket is sick! I'm glad you made the cut. :) It's so cute that Mr. T lines everything up still...so funny.

I think you have met my husband. He was a senior when we were freshman, he attended seminary and all the activities. you might have remembered him by his loud brown truck, with big tires. anyhow way back...I am sure you had to have met him at some time.

Thomas is such a funny kid. Don't worry, we have trauma too with Madison. Only she is really good at being reasoned with (and she is only 18 months). As long as I make a compromise with her and give her something in return, she will spit the binki out and leave it. I absolutely love the last picture of Grace. She is adorable!

Super Nanny definitely makes it look easier and simpler than it is. Grace is looking smilier and smilier...it's fun to see her change. Hopefully this next week will be less trauma filled.

Okay, I've been behind on blogging, I just did a major catch up on the Harper Happenings. Don't worry too much about the trauma...Thomas is a good kid. I love all the stories, but really I am impressed at your parenting through it all. Happy LATE Birthday to Nolan. I'm glad you had a good day. Grace is growing fast. I wish so dang bad we could meet her. I love the clown costume for Thomas, he looks so cute. And, I love the post about your sister...sisters are the best!

Sorry for the crazy summary of my thoughts...we miss you guys so much! I'm back to normal life, I think. So, I'll be better at blogging. :)

Okay, I already commented on this, but in re: to your comment on my recent post--did you know Matt is dating Katie's sister?? Small world!
