James' birthstory

It felt like this day would never come. But we were happy it came a day earlier than we had planned so I didn't have to be induced. The morning of the 10th I woke up to a crying Emma around 5. Nolan got up with her, and I couldn't go back to sleep so I showered. I felt some mild contractions but no different than I had for week now. Around 9:30 they were getting stronger and were very consistent we decided to go to the hospital. Thomas was at school and we dropped the girls off at Nolan's parents. We got to the hospital and they were swamped with C-sections. My Dr. came in and checked me and I had progressed to a 4, so they kept me, but warned me they couldn't break my water to speed things along until things settled down around noon. So Nolan went and rented some movies and we chilled in the delivery room. At 1:30 the anestiologist came in and gave me an epidural before he had a surgery, by that point I was a 5 but still not in any pain. Then Dr. Cannon broke my water, and I started feeling contractions even with the epidural. The nurse came in a half hour later and was concerned because James' heart kept dropping with each contraction. She had me roll to my side and kept switching me. I think this messed with the epidural because it wasn't working. An hour later I came dangerously close to passing out because we were trying to get me more medicine. James' heart was really concerning us and the nurse had me on oxygen, and in all sorts of positions to see if she could get the heart rate up. In a last effort she told me to get on my hands and knees to see if it would help. By this point I was pretty emotional. Then she called in 5 nurses and the Dr. and they said I was a 10 and needed to push. I was shocked that after two hours I was at a ten. James needed delivered so quickly or else they were going to do a C-section. He gave me an episiotomy, and used the vacum right away.
James came after just 13 minutes of pushing, and he was a screamer! It's definitely the most we've heard him cry since. The cord was around the neck and that was causing the drama. I can't explain how shocking it was to be done after just 13 minutes. I felt great! I couldn't believe that just two hours before Nolan and I were eating ice chips and watching a movie, calm as can be.
James looked great too.  We didn't need to worry about his size because he was my biggest baby at 8 lbs. even. His head was big as predicted, but he was an average 20 inches long.
Nolan is a great helper during delivery and recovery. He is running between me and James and the nurses hardly come in.
Everyone just loved all the hair on this little Fuzzball. He actually had a lot of facial hair, but the nurse scrubbed it away during his bath. I love his sideburns.
We haven't nailed down who he looks like quite yet. I think he'll be a blondie like Grace, and he has the same chin as Thomas and I, but he definitely has his own overall look.

That night Aunt Holly came to meet him and then Gary and Susy brought the kids by.
I wish I could post the video of them running in and cheering. They couldn't believe it. They were also very excited to see my belly slightly smaller and Grace told me that now I can jump on the trampoline with her. Emma was indifferent. It was late and she was tired, so no picture of the two of them!
That first night the nurses were awesome about taking him. I think he was so chill they would forget to bring him into nurse, and I had to call for him after 5 hours, then after 4. I might be the weirdest person, but I love the hospital. The beds are horrible, the tv has no dvr, and of course you're recovering, but it's so special just spending that time with your new baby, being encouraged to sleep whenever you want, and having food delivered to you at all hours of the day.
Our Pediatrician is also our High Councilman. He came in to do the circumcision and wanted to see if he could guess James' name, and he guessed RIGHT! We doubted him, but he promised he didn't know beforehand. It was pretty funny. I asked if he could guess the middle name and he guessed Ephraim. Not quite Jett, but one out of 2 ain't bad.
Oh we love you James Jett!

I was outloud oohing and aahing the whole way through! You really captured the intensity of delivery with the worry, and relief, and the love. I can't wait to meet him. I really love him already.

Here's a little tip:
when you start a post way before you publish, schedule the post before you publish. that way it comes up in people's readers as a new blog post, instead of being a week or two old. Is that bossy? just an idea!!!

Oh man Ashley....it sounded much more dramatic than you told me over the phone. It sounded kind of scary for a little bit there. I seriously teared up looking at that 2nd to last picture. He is just so beautiful and perfect. I wish I could cuddle with him. Thanks for posting!!

Thank you for this. I loved reading about your experience, but I had to remind myself that everything was ok. I was getting all nervous. I think he looks like you, and can't believe how beautiful you are ALWAYS!! Love you so much. I hope your kids know how blessed they are.

AND - I loved the hospital too. I just loved being a bit pampered for a couple of days. Hotels are better, but that wasn't an option. haha

First off, he's so stinkin' cute, and that hair is awesome. Next, you do not look like you just gave birth. Third, I also like the alone time in the hospital with the baby. Fourth, so scary about his heart beat. All 3 of mine have had the same problem, and every time, I've known it would be okay, but it still is so scary.

If you thought this was good try one of these...
